Governance
of
IT is the system of controlling or directing the Information
Technology in an organisation. It is getting value from your IT. It is
reducing the risks associated with IT. It is ensuring compliance with
the multitude of laws and regulations surrounding your use of IT.
It is vital to small and medium organisations. Small and
medium organisations do not often
have the resources to effectively manage their IT. They often delegate
management to others. Providing a framework for those others to work
within is Governance.
Security of Information, in its widest sense, is becoming a major
compliance issue.
In schools there is a significant separation between those responsible
for governance and those managing IT. The issues are similar but the
consequences can be far more profound.
John Graham, our Principal Consultant, is a leader in Australian
thought on the governance of IT. He also has wide experience in both
schools, small and medium organisations. He is one of the primary
authors of the Australian Standard, AS 8015:2005 Corporate governance
of information and communication technology, which has been adopted as
a ISO/IEC standard (ISO/IEC 38500:2008.
John is a member of the ISO/IEC JTC1 Study Group on IT Governance and
has been nominated as an Australian Expert to the IT Governance and IT
Service Management working groups of ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7. He has recently
returned from the meetings of these groups in Berlin. He is also a
member of Standards Australia Technical Committees IT-030 IT Governance
and Management and IT-012 IT Security and Identity Management.
